Tablet is an award-winning online publication that explores Jewish life and culture in all its diversity. In redesigning its identity and website, our focus was on creating a dynamic and modular design system that reflected the publication’s unique voice and broadening audience. Drawing inspiration from community-led ephemera like historical Jewish newspapers, temple newsletters, and vernacular design like Lower East Side theater posters, we developed a visual language rooted in tradition but infused with a bold, contemporary personality.

The custom logotype, based on Clarendon, gives the nameplate a brash yet warm character, setting the tone for a site that balances authority with accessibility. Each section was given distinct typographic treatments using a curated mix of period-inspired typefaces, while design elements like newspaper-toned backgrounds, black-and-white-to-color image rollovers, and widget-style sidebars reinforce the publication’s editorial depth. The fully modular grid allows for flexible content arrangement, with tools like “hero modules” for major stories, and a secondary “Scroll” navigation emulating the experience of flipping through a richly layered Sunday paper.
